Seylan Bank PLC has announced a vacancy for the position of Legal Officer. This opportunity is suitable for qualified Attorneys-at-Law with relevant professional experience who are interested in developing their career in Sri Lanka's banking and financial services sector.
The selected candidate will be involved in litigation-related work, legal documentation, title and deed searches, mortgage-related matters, regulatory compliance, legal research and providing legal advice to branches and business units of the Bank.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Should be an Attorney-at-Law with a minimum of 4 years of experience.
- Should possess a Notarial Licence in English within the jurisdiction of the Colombo High Court.
- Should possess sound knowledge of conveyancing.
- Should be computer literate and possess good public relations skills.
- Should be able to communicate effectively in English and Sinhala.
- Should be able to independently draft and prepare legal documents, deeds and mortgage bonds.
- Previous experience in the commercial banking sector will be considered an added advantage.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Draft and review legal pleadings and appear in courts as an Instructing Attorney on behalf of the Bank.
- Liaise with court registries to ensure the timely and accurate handling of cases.
- Coordinate with external counsel, monitor case progress and ensure timely follow-up.
- Maintain and update case records and the Legal Monitoring System and report case progress to management, branches and departments.
- Conduct title and deed searches at Land Registries and prepare title reports and pedigrees.
- Draft and attest deeds and other related legal instruments.
- Provide legal opinions to branches and departments regarding mortgaged or proposed mortgaged properties.
- Handle registration of deeds and mortgage bonds and ensure registered documents are delivered to the relevant branches.
- Maintain up-to-date records of deeds and mortgage bonds.
- Provide practical and timely legal advice to business units while supporting compliance and management of legal risks.
- Draft and review agreements and transactional documents.
- Liaise with external counsel, regulators and relevant authorities on legal matters.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments, conduct legal research and communicate relevant findings promptly.
