About Sri Lanka Customs Inspector Limited Exam 2026

The Sri Lanka Customs Department has invited online applications for the Limited Competitive Examination for recruitment to Grade II of the post of Inspector of Customs – 2026.

According to the Gazette notification, the limited examination is used to fill 50% of the vacancies in Grade II of the Inspector of Customs post from eligible officers who satisfy the prescribed service and professional qualifications.

Main Qualifications

  • Applicant should satisfy the service requirements applicable to officers of the Customs Guard service.
  • A Grade II Customs Guard officer should have the required period of active and satisfactory service.
  • Required salary increments should have been earned during the prescribed service period.
  • The officer should have demonstrated satisfactory or higher performance under the approved performance appraisal procedure.
  • The relevant Efficiency Bar Examination requirements must be satisfied.
  • All applicable qualifications must be completed within the dates specified in the official Gazette notification.
Important: Transitional provisions are also included in the Gazette for certain officers who satisfy the specified conditions by 31 December 2026. Therefore, applicants should read the full Gazette before deciding their eligibility.

Service Experience Requirement

The Gazette states that an applicant under the main limited-stream requirement should generally have completed at least three years of service in Grade II of the Customs Guard post, together with the other required service conditions.

Applicants should not rely only on a summary of the qualifications because additional requirements relating to confirmation in service, disciplinary records, performance assessments, salary increments, Efficiency Bar examinations and language proficiency may apply depending on the relevant category.

Case Study Examination – Main Areas

The written examination tests knowledge through case studies based on duties and procedures connected with Customs Inspector work. The Gazette includes areas such as:

General Interview

Candidates who obtain the required pass mark in the written examination and satisfy the prescribed qualifications may be called for a general interview. The general interview is used to verify whether candidates satisfy the basic qualifications required for recruitment.

Examination Language

The examination is conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English. A candidate must sit the entire examination in the selected language medium, and the medium cannot be changed after submitting the application.
